Between reportage and storytelling, a sweeping dramatic portrait of contemporary history.
For more than thirty-five years, Guillaume Herbaut has travelled the world, meeting people whose lives have been caught up in the upheavals of history. From blood feuds in Albania to femicides and gang warfare in Mexico, from the trauma of Chernobyl to the revolution and then the war in Ukraine, and finally to the fault lines of France’s Fifth Republic, the photographer explores landscapes steeped in memory, bringing their invisible tragedies to light.
For this book, Guillaume Herbaut delves back into his archives, taking a retrospective look at his career. The selected images, interspersed with previously unpublished first-person accounts, reveal the distinctive nature of his approach: a form of photography born of encounters, shared time, and an unwavering attentiveness to both people and places.
